Every year, students from all walks of life have the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. They progress from classroom bees right here at Boulder Creek, to the library for our school bee, and then to a junior high auditorium for the district bee!  Winners from the district bee can then go on to compete at additional levels!

What is an Oratorical Contest?  It is a contest where students have an opportunity to give a speech on an “American Heritage” topic.  The top two winners in each age group will represent Boulder Creek at the district level.

  • Here are the guidelines for the competition:
  • Theme of Presentation: Must relate in some way to our “American Heritage”
  • Length of Talk: Not less than 3 minutes Not more than 5 minutes

**Penalty points will be deducted if the talk is too short or too long
and if they are prompted or use notes.

Contestants will be judged on the following criteria:

  1. Content – importance and suitability of material. It should convey in some way a patriotic message. It does not have to be an original speech (i.e. The Gettysburg Address).
  2. Organization – does the speaker make his or her purpose clear and not ramble?
  3. Presentation and Style – Diction – vocal variety or monotone – use of gestures.
  4. Poise – Self-assurance, appearance, eye contact.
  5. Effectiveness – Convincing – interest generated?
  6. Appropriate costumes are okay but please no props or Powerpoint presentations. The focus should be on the child’s speech.
