Welcome to Kindergarten!

I would like to welcome you to Kindergarten at Boulder Creek Elementary School. We are going to have a wonderful year.

This handout includes important information and should answer most of your questions. Please keep this in a safe place to refer to throughout the year. If you have any questions at anytime, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Drop Off and Pick Up

Hours 8:23 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Children may not be dropped off until 8:05 a.m. because there is no supervision before then. The Kindergarten playground is the closest to the building with the yellow slide. I will pick up the children on the playground by our room number. When school is over, you may wait for your car rider in your car along the fence. If you chose to park and get out, Kindergarteners will be inside by the side doors near the office. The I.A. will let them out when your child sees you. If your child is a walker, they will be waiting at the west entrance of the school. I will walk bus riders, and daycare children to their vans, and drop the VIK kids off at the VIK room.

If there is a change in your child’s transportation home, please notify me with a note, phone call, or in person as soon as possible.

Backpacks

Please label backpacks and lunch boxes with your child’s first and last name. My name and room number would also be helpful. Ms. Valenzuela Room 102. There will be a colored tag on their backpack designating their mode of trandsportation. Red-bus, Green-walker, Yellow-parent pick up out of car, White-Day Care Van, Orange-VIK, and Blue-parent pick up stay in car.

Have your child bring their full size backpack to school everyday. It is important to check your child’s backpack daily and remove class work and/or informative handouts from the pockets.

Clothing and Dress Code

Please review the school dress code. Flip-flops are strongly discouraged for safety reasons. Kindergarteners are very active, so please dress them accordingly. Keep in mind that we will be doing art projects and other messy activities. I do my best to keep them clean, but sometimes accidents happen. Please keep a change of clothing (including socks) in their backpacks in a gallon size plastic Ziploc bag. This is in case of bathroom accidents or other messy incidents like falling in the mud. The nurse has a limited supply of clothing to change into. With many of you at work during the day, we won’t have to bother you for a change of clothes.

Absent Students

If your child is going to be absent, please notify the office at

(480) 507-1404.  If you take your child out of school during the day, we require you to sign your student out at the office.

 Birthdays

Treats for birthdays are optional. We will eat birthday treats at the end of the day under the ramada on the playground. Please make sure to bring enough for 28 students. Your child will receive a birthday crown from me. If you’d like their name and birthday to be displayed on the marquee there are pink forms in the office or let me know and I can get you one. The cost for 1 day is $5 or $10 for the week. All money raised from this goes directly back to our classroom.

Money

If your child needs to bring money to school, please send it in a sealed envelope with the following information written on it. This is especially important for lunch money. This helps me out tremendously and reduces the likelihood of errors.

Your child’s first and last name.

  1. The amount of money.
  2. The purpose for the money (book orders, fundraiser, lunch, etc.)
  3. My name and room number Ms. Valenzuela Room 102.

In addition, if the envelope is lost, this information will help facilitate the return of the money to my classroom.

Snacks

I like to give the children a small snack daily. Let me know if your child has a food allergy or diet restriction. Monthly snack donations for the class are greatly appreciated. I have created a monthly snack calendar with assigned dates and a student for each day. Your child’s name will not be on the snack calendar. Instead, I will have a number. Each child will know their number and their class number will be written on their Daily Folder. Please return the snack box on your day. We need enough snacks for 28 students. No drinks are necessary. Please try to avoid snacks with too much sugar. Here is a list of some options, but feel free to be creative: Goldfish, Graham Crackers, Animal Crackers, Pretzels, Mini-Muffins, Fruit Snacks, etc.

Water Bottles

Your child may bring a labeled water bottle to school. Please no soda, juice, Gatorade, etc. (except for at lunch). They will have access to a water fountain, but it is much easier to have water near them.

Lunch

Your child may bring a sack lunch from home or we offer 4 lunch choices daily: one hot entrée choice and three cold packaged choices. All meals include milk and/or juice. Lunch costs $2.65. Lunch menus will be sent home in August. After that they are available online at www.gilbertschools.net.

Breakfast is available for $1.50, milk and juice are $.75, and water is $1.00. Occasionally cookies and other treats are sold for $.50 each.

When your child buys lunch from school, they will receive a number on their hand. This number designates their lunch choice and helps the lunch line go faster.

At Boulder Creek we play first and then come in for lunch. I will walk your child out to recess. They are supervised by our Instructional Assistants.  They will stay with the children until lunch is over. The children are given 20 minutes to eat their lunch. If they don’t finish they are directed to throw their food away. They are encouraged to eat. Once lunch is over, I will come and pick them up from the cafeteria.

You can put money on your student’s account at the school or online at www.myschoolbucks.com. Money entered online will appear on the student’s account. You can check your child’s account balance online. If you send lunch money, please put it in an envelope and label it with your child’s first and last name, my name, and put lunch money on the front. If your child gets a stamp on their hand it means that your child needs lunch money. If you don’t send lunch  money, they it is possible that you will begin to owe money to the cafeteria. Children with no lunch money are given a cheese sandwich. Questions regarding lunch accounts can be directed to Anita Veach at (480) 507-1404 ext. 315.

Bulldog of the Week

Each week, a student will be chosen to share a little bit about him/herself with the class. When it is your child’s turn, I will send home a poster for you and your child to complete over the weekend and return on Monday. Mickey Mouse will come home with his book as well. Please take photos and print them out for your child to share. There is no limit so you can do as little as 1 or 10. There will be pages for you to glue them on and for your child to write a sentence about each photo.

Show-n-Tell

When it is your child’s turn to be Bulldog of the Week they may bring one item to share with the class. Show-n-Tell will take place on Friday. Otherwise, please do not allow your child to bring toys to school.

Progress Reports and Report Cards

Progress Reports will be sent home in between report cards to keep you updated on your child’s progress. Report Cards go home every quarter. We will meet in October for Parent Teacher Conferences. Conferences will be schedule on www.signupgenius.com. Report Cards are not printed out and are available online. Log in information will be given at conferences.

Book Orders

Book orders will be sent home monthly. Scholastic offers good quality literature at relatively low costs. You may also order online at www.scholastic.com. Our class code is GLQ93M.

Daily Folders

Please remove the papers daily from your child’s folder. Folders need to be returned everyday. Please check it daily as well.

Volunteers

If you are interested in volunteering in class or out of class, please let me know and we can create a volunteer schedule a few weeks from now. In class, volunteers will help students complete their work, do art projects, put up or take down bulletin boards, read with students, assist students who need extra help, and more. Out of class volunteers will help at home by cutting out laminating, coloring, making file folder games, and/or getting projects ready for class.

Spirit Days and Pride Days

We have several spirit days during the school year. These will be on the monthly calendar. You can check the school website as well www.gilbertschools.net. Pride Days are days where we wear our school shirts. These shirts are available for purchase. We have assemblies once a month and those dates will be on the calendar too.

Specials

The students will attend a special area class for 40 minutes a day. These classes include Library-Mrs. Seals, Music-Christensen, Computers, Art-Mrs. Gomez and P.E.-Mr. Starks.
